Dora cakes are a popular Japanese sandwich snack made of two fluffy pancakes with a sweet filling. One version of the tasty treat has been all over the internet recently — Oreo Dora cakes — and they’re made with just three simple ingredients you likely have at your house right now: Oreo cookies, milk, and baking powder.
One nice thing about these Dora cakes is that they could be made with any version of Oreos you have on hand, from original to peanut butter to the new Lady Gaga cookies that are pink with green creme.
While the cakes are pretty easy to make when you want something sweet, it is a little tedious to scrape the creme filling off of every Oreo. But once that’s done, you just blitz the cookies in a food processor for a few seconds, mix in milk and baking powder, and cook the batter into mini pancakes. For the sweet filling, you just have to melt the creme from the cookies. When the pancakes are cooked, re-add the filling by spreading some on one pancake before taking another and making a sandwich. The final product does still resemble an Oreo, just in a different form.
While this recipe does technically work, there are a few caveats to making it that you should know about. In the video I watched for this recipe, the baker added quite a bit of extra creme that this recipe didn’t call for. This made my cakes less “filled” than the ones I saw in the video. If you want a more stuffed Dora cake, consider scraping more creme but still using the same amount of cookie halves recommended.
Another thing not mentioned that you should be aware of is that the cake need to be completely cooled before you put the filling on the cakes. The last thing that didn’t quite work for me is the taste of the final cake sandwich. Because Oreo cookies are already a baked product, baking it again on a griddle left the Dora cake tasting a little burnt even though I watched the pancakes very carefully.
Would I go through the trouble of making these again? Probably not. I didn’t think they tasted great for the amount of work required, and in all honesty, when I want something that taste like Oreos, I’ll just grab the box of cookies, pour a glass of milk, and start munching. You can use any type of Oreos, but I used original since that’s what the recipe called for.
- 10 Oreo Cookies
6 tablespoons milk
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- Separate the cookie part of an Oreo from the creme filling and, using a butter knife, scrape away as much of the frosting as possible. Place the creme in a bowl and set aside.
- Place the cookie parts of the Oreos in a blender or food processor and pulse until the cookies are in small crumbs.
- Pour the cookie crumbs into a bowl and stir in the milk two tablespoons at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the baking powder and stir one more time. When the cookie mixture is smooth like cake batter it’s ready.
- Heat a small skillet or electric griddle on medium heat. When the pan is hot lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray or oil.
- Pour an eighth cup of batter onto the griddle. When all of the bubbles have popped flip each pancake and cook for another minute or two.
- While the cakes are cooking heat the creme fillings over a double boiler or in the microwave just until the creme gets soft. Mix the creme with a spoon until it’s smooth and a little loose.
- When the cakes are done take them off of the griddle and set them aside to cool. You can put them in the refrigerator to cool them off faster.
- After the cakes have completely cooled, take a small amount of creme and spread it on one cake all the way to the edge. Put a second cake on top to make a sandwich. Repeat with the other two cakes.
